So apparently ferrets are illegal in New York City.

I just found this out, though the ban has been in place since 1999. There's been some healthy opposition to it, but Giuliani vetoed a repeal of the ban. Bloomberg, on the other hand, has called the ban a "waste of time" and probably won't block legalization efforts if it comes to him.

Ferrets aren't actively searched out, but if found will most likely be taken away and placed in a shelter or euthanized. Despite this, ferret food and supplies are readily available thoughout the city, and the estimated clandestine ferret population is somewhere around 15,000.

This presents a problem. Should I go ahead and adopt a shelter ferret anyway, and just have it as a hausferret? Provided that we don't get a psycho landlord and I don't get carried away and walk it down the street, it's unlikely that anyone will notice. Or is it not worth the possible confiscation risk? I've always wanted one, and the attitude seems to be somthing like the one of having a cat at Vassar (out of sight, out of mind... apart from their little search thing last year) - but I don't want to get one killed because I wanted an awesome pet.

Fucking lame. Hopefully, there'll be another motion to legalize them soon.
