Still here, still breathing.

A few bits of past news, and events on the horizon.

September seems to be fucking everybody up. A whole mess of my friends are going through crazy and bad shit all at the same time. Something in the air, or in the water. Several catastrophic breakups have happened or are on the horizon, and most everyone else seems to be kind of generally dissatisfied with what they're doing or not doing, myself included. The obvious response of "If you don't like it, change it!" applies, but people are either too entrenched or nervous to change their state, so we're slogging through September with drinks in both hands.

As for me, constant employment remains elusive, which just makes me grumpy instead of making me want to keep looking for jobs. I've started working for Wilburn (and Corinne, once) as an electrician on various calls, which I actually enjoy, even though I don't know all the vocabulary or methods for hanging lights yet. I'm learning pretty quickly, I think (I am already "cable fetcher and genie mover extraordinaire," according to Wb) and can even string a few lights together without being a dumb actor and messing it up too badly. I have my own wrench on a piece of phone cord, just in case there's any doubt that I'm serious about the whole thing. When electrics work pays, it pays pretty damn well, but it's infrequent since I doubt I'd be much help at a call where I don't know the people in charge (at least not yet).

So I can sorta say that I'm employed, but not really. If people ask, I just say I "freelance theater electrics" which sounds suitably impressive. This week I think I will apply at Trader Joe's and a theater concessions place, resubmit an application to Borders (who have evidently forgotten about me - I am too trusting when they say "We'll call you!") and if all that fails, pull out the Starbucks application that is languishing on my fold out sofa and see if I can't get a job working with Sir Morgan.

I have also been asked what I'm doing with auditions, and the reply is: nothing. I want to get a solid job nailed down before trying to buckle down to acting, which I know isn't going to pay anything remotely close to a liveable wage at first (if, indeed, it pays anything at all). Meanwhile, I have been flipping through monologue books and reading plays in an effort to find new, interesting audition monologues. Definitely keeping "Theseus and Pirithous" from IOL, and might do the Player speech from "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" (notice a theme, Mr. Stoppard?). Others are still pending approval. This is one instance where keeping an actor's notebook in class has come in handy - pre-selected monologues kick ass.

I've been working on Coach Z's documentary "Not A Period Correct Gun" which has been a lot of fun so far. In order to maintain the storyline, I have allowed my arm to be twisted (it wasn't hard) into going to Perryville (!!!) in October, with Pridgeon's Shenandoah Legion, run by Sean's dad. Andrew is coming with us, and there are rumors that The Wiz himself will be there - Team Farbfinger will be in full effect and I can't wait.

Other good bits include the location of a pretty sweet semi-permanent flea market a few blocks from Union Square, and going with Em to see The World/Inferno Friendship Society at the Spiegeltent. So awesome was this show (twelve songs about Peter Lorre, including a bunch of new ones, and then a collection of other songs - Stza from Leftöver Crack was there and got up to sing on "Only Anarchists Are Pretty") that I am going back on the 24th to see the second one. They don't check bags or anything, so I am bringing a better camera next time, and trying to get some really good photos (inbetween dancing, that is). Funnily enough, there were some leftover pictures on my old camera memory card, which were of Inferno in Poughkeepsie. They aren't really much good, though.

There's Jack!

And there's the cat that lives around the corner. I am thinking rather seriously about abducting it and bringing it home.

Okay, it's outside time. At least outside the apartment. Where to go....

Memo: If someone says they can babysit every day except Saturday, and says it three or four times in emails and a phone call, don't expect them to show up to babysit on Saturday. Furthermore, please don't then call your husband saying that they bailed out on you without letting you know, causing you to miss rehearsal. Because they will hear about it, and lo, it shall make them Annoyed.

It also helps if you make plans with someone during the day and not at 1130 the night before you want them to come do something that necessitates waking up in the neighborhood of 7 AM. At that point, plans have been made, and simply because some of us aren't working, it doesn't mean that we don't have things to do as well. Plus, it's common courtesy, and shall make them Further Annoyed, especially when they feel they need to apologise for then not being informed of when and where and how on Sunday.

As you can guess, I have been Annoyed, and then Further Annoyed

Anyway, I got a new jacket today, which is totally making the entire situation a lot better. Sean and I went down to St. Mark's, as we do, and stopped at this little hole in the wall shop where a guy (Boris) with a strong Russian accent does custom leather repair, sneaker design, and airbrushing. After talking with Boris for a bit ("How's buisness these days, man?" "Ah, same old, zere are foohcking heepsters walk back and fors' all day") I saw an amazing leather jacket on the wall - it fit me perfectly, and he let me have it for $30. It needs a pocket liner sewn shut, a non-essential zipper unstuck (which Boris is apparently a dab hand at), and a good airing out, but still - amazing for the price. Especially given the usual prices of things in New York City, particularly in the East Village. Boris sent me off with my new posession, promising that if I ever needed a good pair of Doc Marten's, he'd set me up.

Now I need to get the World/Inferno logo painted on the back, and all will be awesome.

I like this one, but it'd take a while and I'd probably have to get Annie to do it.

Simpler, still an Annie job, but also very cool.

At the very least, some stencils or something. Cause, you know, I can't have an undecorated jacket, and the jean jacket can't last forever.

KATE MONSTER:
I wish I could go back to college.
Life was so simple back then.

NICKY:
What would I give to go back and live in a dorm with a meal plan again!

PRINCETON:
I wish I could go back to college.
In college you know who you are.
You sit in the quad, and think, "Oh my God!
I am totally gonna go far!"

ALL:
How do I go back to college?
I don't know who I am anymore!

PRINCETON:
I wanna go back to my room and find a message in dry-erase pen on the door!
Ohhh...
I wish I could just drop a class...

NICKY:
Or get into a play...

KATE MONSTER:
Or change my major...

PRINCETON:
Or fuck my T.A.

ALL:
I need an academic advisor to point the way!
We could be...
Sitting in the computer lab,
4 A.M. before the final paper is due,
Cursing the world 'cause I didn't start sooner,
And seeing the rest of the class there, too!

PRINCETON:
I wish I could go back to college!

ALL:
How do I go back to college?!

PRINCETON:
I wish I had taken more pictures.

NICKY:
But if I were to go back to college,
Think what a loser I'd be-
I'd walk through the quad,
And think "Oh my God..."

ALL:
"These kids are so much younger than me."

You have: ONE new voice message.

First message.

Hey Geoff, it's Sean. Uhh, I was just walking in the convenience store on the corner by my house, and guess who fucking walked out of the convenience store, dude! Jack from World/Inferno Friendship Society, he lives right up the street from me, and he invited us to go to a bar with him and hang out sometime. Dig that shit! I'll talk to you later, dude, bye.

End of new messages. To erase this message, press seven. To save it press nine.

I think I saw someone get killed today. If not killed, seriously hurt.

A girl on a bicycle got hit by a car. I didn't see that part, but when the large women started yelling behind me I had a look around and saw an inert body on the ground across the street. Her bicycle was several feet farther down the street.

A crowd gathered immediately, at least ten people immediately pulled out phones and called 911, one guy who looked like he knew what he was doing kind of took charge, the police showed up, the fire department EMTs showed up, an ambulance with paramedics showed up, put her on the stretcher and drove away. She didn't move a muscle the entire time.

There's other news, but it doesn't really seem all that important.

Our internet's kinda busted, but:

JACK TERRICLOTH OWNS MY VERY SOUL. MY RED-EYED SOUL, AT THAT.

Brilliant show. More to follow when the connection is better. I need to take a shower immediately. That much rock leaves a lot of residue (of sweat!)

huttah!

Impending happiness and love are coming the way of New York City next Friday night!

That's right: it's the World/Inferno Friendship Society. The CD release show for "Red-Eyed Soul" which is every bit as good as their old stuff, and take it from me (and everyone else who has ever been) the live shows are absolutely the most fun ever. For those who have not heard me (or Hardysan or Julianna or Jesse or whoever) evangelize about them, here is an uncommonly accurate description of what to expect, from their website:

The World/Inferno Friendship Society give you your damn soul back. It's been up all night, thinks everything is hysterical, and keeps humming tunes about Halloween and heroes, love lost and found, and the chivalry of crime. It sweats like whiskey and cries real red wine. It's chiding your friends for being so sad, mumbling, "You bouncers don't scare me one bit," and yelling "I joined a punk-rock band to break stuff, not to sit around lawyers' offices!" at inappropriate moments. Fifteen new songs by NYC's original international Punk-Rock Orchestra of elegant and angry Gentlemen and Ladies produced by Hardcore legend Don Fury and released by New Jersey Pioneer Punk-Rock label Chunksaah! The piano croons, the guitars shout, the drummers threaten, saxophones rip you from where you are tied to the mast, the accordion just stole your wallet, the string section is whispering in your ear, "don't be a jerk," and boys and girls are singing in harmony "only anarchists are ! . . . pretty!" Life is a cabaret, the circus is leaving town, don't forget the struggle, don't forget the streets.

Check out some of their sound samples (http://www.myspace.com/worldinferno) and for the sake of all that is good let us go bask in the glory that is Jack Terricloth. Bowery Ballroom, July 28. $15. Come forth and experience.

What else are you gonna do to me today, life, you motherfucker?

You stole my favorite hat, my cell phone, and one of my jobs, not to mention ruined the end of what was a fun weekend.

It's a good thing this ended up looking OK. )

Really, I am very close to pulling a Master Shake, wherein I just run towards the nearest living thing and kill it.

Sometimes, I wonder how well I really know my friends.

A lot of those times, I am forced to conclude that I don't know them all that well.

But why the hell am I writing this here? You're all my friends. Do I know you?

I have no idea.

Also PS: Headshots in the morning. Have been in a wardrobe tizzy this evening. Finally arrived at some passable conclusions (WHY do I not own any solid color tshirts in anything but black??). Man. Stupid actors and their stupid photographs. I'm a bit nervous.

Perhaps I shall go to the Old Bethpage Village event on Long Island.

As a spectator and farbhunter at the very least.

And I shall bring Alan and Hillary and it will be a great time.

It's a new era. Less doormat-y. If I'm a waste of time after two weeks, well, shiny (as they say). We can forget each other like before.

Otherwise: job front is inactive, casting decisions were made in someone else's favor, Firefly rocks my fucking world (you guys were totally right), [livejournal.com profile] thespis42, [livejournal.com profile] hilariousfool and "[livejournal.com profile] oldsilenus are great summer drinkin' buddies, and adventuring with Diana is the cure for all that ails you.

Fourth of July was explosive.

Well, look at this. In New York for only ten days, and I absolutely love it. Let's look at why, shall we?

Point A: The Apartment )

Point B: The Social Scene )

Point C: I Love My Camera. )

That's all the points. It's a great city. Now, hopefully this week we will hear from some jobs.

Start spreading the news
I'm leaving today
I want to be a part of it, New York, New York
These vagabond shoes
Are longing to stray
And make a brand new start of it
New York, New York
I want to wake up in the city that never sleeps
To find I'm king of the hill, top of the heap
These little town blues
Are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it
In old New York
If I can make it there
I'll make it anywhere
It's up to you, New York, New York.

I'm moving in the morning.

To say goodbye, Fox and I played with fire. )

Someday I'll update for real.

Senior week is the absolutely least convenient time to decide that you are seriously interested in somebody.

Dammit!

(I know there hasn't been a real update in forever. Maybe there will be someday. Mostly, I've been slightly drunk and going to events. This is what's on my mind at the moment, though.)

And I know I'm at least partly serious, because it has been a LONG time since I have allowed this level of freedom of expression. You can tell it has been a long time because I have no idea what I'm doing anymore, and probably rating four out of five turtles on the awkward scale, if not more.

It would have to happen now, wouldn't it. Fortune, I curse you... unless one of the seven shooting stars I saw last night has any effect.
