warning: political post
Apr. 1st, 2004 06:30 pmAnyone who can should go to New Paltz this Sunday (the 4th) to protest Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church. Phelps and company are staunchly against gay rights and marriage efforts... perhaps staunchly isn't the proper term... go to their homepage and see for yourself... and they're here under the ridiculous title of "Love Crusade" to protest the "Pink Swastika Anarchical Tyranny of Sodom (New Paltz) and Gomorrah (Nyack)." Honestly, this guy and his followers are bigots beyond measure (even if gay marriage isn't a strong point for you, they've protested in Hawaii to thank God for Pearl Harbor, and in NYC for September 11th at an anti-FDNY rally) and need to be countered. Dana Wegener and her partner Jennifer Smits, who have been specifically singled out by WBC, have asked that protestors stand silently against Phelps, and not give the WBC further ammunition by becoming confrontational.
There's a table in College Center that can give further information on the protest. If nothing else, show up in New Paltz at noon this Sunday.
Please pass this on to anyone you know in the area. If anyone with guts wants to put this on the Vassar board, be my guest... there's a lot of political flaming going on there (by myself included) and I don't want to ruffle any more feathers. Though honestly, anyone unruffled by this needs their head examined.
